Barningham CEVC Primary School has close ties with St Andrew’s, the Parish Church which is near the school in Church Road. The Rector Reverend Cathy Blayden is a foundation governor at the school and frequently visits the school to lead Collective Worship and assist on some Fridays for the ‘Open the Book’ sessions. Members of High Street Chapel, Hopton also attend to act out stories from the bible through the Open the Book team and to lead Collective Worship. Our recent chair of governors, Elizabeth Hall, is the church organist.
The children enjoy visiting the Church to discover its long history of over 500 years and interesting features. The children are able to sketch the mediaeval angels and carved bench end figures such as the pig in the pulpit and the camel. The chancel screen is also examined and is probably mid 15th century. The font is early 14th century and the children appreciate the patterns carved on the bowl.
The end of term services are held in the Church and are attended by the children, parents and carers. At the end of the summer term service at the church the Barningham Charity presented each of the Year 6 leavers with a copy of the Youth Bible. The bibles were donated by the Barningham Charities.
Several Barningham school children have attended ‘Acts’, the youth group run by members of the Church.
